Castro’s Dictatorship Timeline:
Aug. 13, 1926: Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born.
1947: Fidel Castro joined a coup against Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
1953: July 26, Castro and his men are arrested after a failed attack against Batista’s government. On October he was sentenced to prison.
1955: Castro was released and went into exile to Mexico, there he organized and established the 26th of July movement and he also met Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Castro returned to Cuba and started his coup against Flugencio Batista.
Jan. 1, 1959: Batista escaped from Cuba as Castro’s forces entered Havana. In the following week, a new government was formed and Castro assumed the leadership. Castro’s government began expropriating US-owned property.
1960: Castro established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union.
April 17–19, 1961: Castro defeated the US-military in the Bay of Pigs invasion, Castro’s prestige increased.
Feb. 7, 1962: The US imposed a trade embargo against Cuba and the Cuban Missile Crises occurred.
2007: Castro wrote some essays called “Reflections of the Commander in Chief “and he published an essay saying that he didn’t intended to cling power forever, and that he will not “obstruct the path of younger people.”
Jan. 20, 2008: Castro is re-elected to parliament, but after a month he resigned to the presidency.
